Study on the Jam and Recovery Process of the Evacuation Passage

The jam of the passage will enlarge the evacuation time and even result in casualties under emergency situations. The paper analyzed the process from the state of obstacles in passage transformed into the jam of the passage, proposed a model to research on the process of jam and the process of recovery. The experimental function of crowd density-crowd flow rate is adopted, the ratio between the width of the obstacle and the total width of the passage (LIW), the initial crowd density are set as variables to research on the threshold of the transform process and the recovery process of the jam. At the same, we compared the results with different crowd density-crowd flow rate functions. It was proved that the jam was occurred only when the crowd density reached some certain value when the value of LIW is defined. The change of the recovery time following the increase of the crowd density takes on different tendency between different functions under the same obstacle time. These mainly due to there are difference of maximum crowd density between different crowd density-crowd flow rate functions. The findings can be used to the management and control of public venues.
