Risk Assessment of Water Level Effect on Ship-Bridge Collision
The influence of water level on ship-bridge collision is mathematically studied. The present results suggest that the current effect of ship passage under bridge cause a drift and hereby the collision probability increase. However, the water level in the Yangtze River is irregular while most of researchers study the probability on a regular water level. Firstly, the paper reviews the ship-bridge collision historical data analysis and hereby brings up with the mathematic model as the risk analysis method. Second, horizontal clearance is detailed analyzed to find out the correlation-ship between width of bridge and the number of accidents. It also discusses the turbulence area near the bridge pier that is a negative impact on the safe passage. Third, a traffic-based model on ship-bridge collision is bought out to define the probability of loss of control and the impact A X1 geographic distribution model is introduced to analyze the ship traffic lane and hereby a ship-bridge collision probability is discussed based on a real bridge in the Three Gorges. It concludes that various water level should be seriously considered so as to minimize the risk of the ship-bridge collision. Finally, it recommends that Formal Safety Assessment could be introduced during the bridge design phase.
