Corporate Contexts and Patent Licensing Strategies-Towards a Theoretical Model
Despite the preoccupation of patents by practitioners, theoretical development of patent licensing strategies from the perspective of management and business has been overlooked. This paper proposes a conceptual model towards patent licensing strategies to emphasise that patent is a strategic management matter because corporate contexts of patents are important factors to influence managerial decision of licensing strategies. These factors are (1) the fit between patents and the core business of the company; (2) patent structure that decides a companys resources for licensing activities; (3) patent competition that relates to the strategic incentive to licensing; and (4) patent environment that provides protection for firms to maximize their patent value through licensing. These factors interact and decide what, how and why patent should be strategized.
