Experiment Study on Pedestrian Flow on Stairwells
In this paper, pedestrian flows on stairwells in an office building during evacuation drills and in a subway station at peak tune are studied comparatively. Considerable data of flow, density and speed of crowd movement on stairwells are collected and analyzed. The relation formulas between flow and density in the two cases are summarized respectively and compared with results in SFPE handbook. The results show that the relation between flow and density of subway pedestrian flow in this study is similar to that of pedestrian flows in Canadian drills described in SFPE handbook. The optimum densities, i.e. the densities lead to the highest flow, of the drill and subway pedestrian flows are both around 2 persons/m2 similar to results in SFPE handbook, despite different values of the highest flow. The result of this study is valuable reference for evacuation study, safety design of building as well as pedestrian flow management.
