Education and Training of Translation and Interpreting Professionals in China

Currently in China translators and interpreters are rare talents in the employment market though there has been an overwhelming interest in English language learning all over the country over the past two decades. Thousands of graduates majoring in foreign languages come out of Chinese colleges and universities each year, yet they are not trained as translation and interpreting professionals. This paper attempts to investigate the present situation of the education of translation and interpreting professionals in Chinese colleges and universities, analyze the reason of the shortage of such professionals in the employment market, and finally, to propose some strategies to educate more qualified professionals of translation and interpreting, such as reforming curricula, teaching method and content, building up the TI discipline in more colleges and universities, supervising TI Market and increasing governmental support. It argues that the education and training of TI professionals is a joint project requiring the cooperation between institutes of higher learning and governmental agencies.
