Effects of Sintering Temperature and Bi2O3 Doping on Li Volatilization in LiZn Ferrites

LiZn ferrites (LZFs) with composition of Li0.35Zn0.3Fe2.35O4 were prepared using a conventional mixed oxide processing route, and the LZFs doped with 0.0~3.0 wt % Bi2O3 were sintered in air at 1000~1160℃ for 3 h. Magnetic properties, Li volatilization and microstructures were investigated, respectively. 4πMS and He can be improved greatly by doping Bi2O3 sintered at 1000~1050 ℃ because liquid-phase Bi2O3 promotes sintering reaction and crystal growth. Li in undoped LZFs volatilizes above 1000℃ and volatilizes fast at 1050-1100℃ then slowly with increase sintering temperature. The value of Li volatilization reaches about 10 wt % at 1160℃, however, Li volatilization can be effectively restrained by Bi2O3. Sintered at 1100℃, the value of Li volatilization decreases obviously with the increase in Bi203,especially at 0.5 wt % ~ 1.0 wt %, and Li volatilizes slowly when the concentration of Bi2O3 exceeds 1.0 wt%. The value of Li volatilization decreases from 8.0 wt % to 1.0 wt% by doping 3.0 wt % Bi2O3 because the liquid-phase Bi2O3 acts as a buffer and restrains Li volatilization during the sintering process.
