Manufacture of Li Ferrite by Mechanical Ball Milling
The Manufacture of Li ferrite by mechanical ball milling has been studied in this paper. The formation process of the Li ferrite was investigated by means of the as and XRD measurements of powder with different milling time. The sintering behavior of samples with different heat treatments was analyzed. The results indicated that, using water as the grinding medium, Li ferrite can be formed by mechanical ball milling from Li2CO3 and Fe2O3 powder mixture, and that the reaction of Li ferrite synthesis has two stages. The longer the milling time, the more adequately the reaction occurred. The LiFeO2 was the intermediate of the solid state reaction. The resultant Li ferrite powder has a mean grain size of less than 70nm. Without water as the grinding medium, nanocrystalline Li ferrite can not be formed directly. The sintering behavior of sample manufactured from the powder using water as the grinding medium was completely different from that of the sample without water as the grinding medium. To the former, the mean grain size can be controlled by suitable heat treatments. To the latter, the reaction temperature was greatly lower than the temperature of traditional process.
