Analysis of Eddy Current Loss of Ferrites
Research was conducted on a method of calculating the eddy current loss of ferrites from the frequency dependence and shape dependence of the ferrites core losses. The core losses of toroidal cores of different heights and different resistivities were measured. (i) The hysteresis loss (component that is proportional to the frequency) and (ii) the eddy current loss and the residual loss (components that are proportional to the square of the frequency) were separated from the frequency dependence of the core loss. Then the eddy current loss, which is proportional to the effective cross-sectional area, and the residual loss, which does not depend on the effective cross-sectional area, were separated from the shape dependence of the core loss. The eddy current loss exhibited good iinearity with respect to the effective cross-sectional area. The results of the analysis confirmed that the eddy current loss is reduced very effectively by the addition of CaO-SiO2. Further advancements in residual loss analysis can be expected to result from this success in separating the eddy current loss from the residual loss.
