Recent Development of Low Loss Mn-Zn Ferrites Designed for Transformers Used in Various Applications

Three new MnZn ferrites with high saturation flux density Bs and low core loss Pcv were developed as materials suitable for transformer cores built into flyback and forward mode switching power supplies. The first material with the Bs of 460 mT and the Pcv at 100 kHz and 200mT of 280kW/m3 at 100℃,respectively is most suitable for flyback converters. The second material, MBT3, improved the temperature dependence of the core loss indicates the minimum core loss value of 245 kW/m3 at 100kHz, 200mT and 90℃ and the third material, MBF4, which indicates much lower losses above 100 kHz as compared with the current low loss material, MB4, are most suitable for forward converters. Using two materials, MBT3 and MBF4, the performance of a forward converter was studied replacing with transformers which are designed with the same shape and size. Both conversion efficiencies are much higher than that using the original commonly used core, and MBF4 particularly indicates the largest conversion efficiency value of 86.8%, which is improved by 3.6% from the original condition.
