Invited Paper Aspects of Ferrite Raw Material Selection and Precise Process Control for the Production of MnZn-Ferrite Powders

Starting with an annual production of a few thousand ton of UPL-type spray roasted iron before ICF 1 (1970), the world wide production at ICF 10 (2008) will be in the order one million ton per year. For the majority of steel mills it is a demanding chemical by-product. Nevertheless, concerted efforts and additional sub-sequent processing steps improved the purity and stability of iron chloride solutions yielding up-graded PPP-and CPP-synthetic ferric oxides, which are considered to be highly attractive and competitive on the market. For future product development a question remains open: What may be accomplished by respective business partners to further improve the performance of basic raw materials for the production of MnZn-ferrites in a cooperative way? Some iron oxide powder properties, along with selected engineering parameters of spray roaster design, may still substantially be improved. Also trace elements accompanying Mn-and Zn-oxides and their influence on precise ferrite micro-structure control will be addressed.
