Ultrasonic sludge liquefication for cryptic growth in SBR
The treatment and disposal of waste activated sludge has become a financial burden and technical challenge in the wastewater treatment plants.Cryptic growth of activated sludge has been found to be an effective method for the reduction of waste activated sludge. This paper employs ultrasonic irradiation to disrupt the sludge structure and to release the cell materials and extracellular polymer substances(EPS).The treated sludge is then recycled as substances for the cryptic growth.SBR is used for the study in order to maintain all activated sludge inside the system.Municipal wastewater was collected from local pipelines. The results showed that ultrasound waves effectively liquefy the activated sludge. The amount of excess sludge could be cut by more 50%when 1/7 of sludge was treated and recycled and the ultrasonic power density was 0.8-1.6 W/L and the sonication time was 15 min.The SBR sludge characteristics including settlability, activity, and size were stable.Accumulation of inorganic component in the SBR was observed. The effluent COD and total nitrogen( TN)concentrations were stable but the TP Value was higll. The system has maintained stable for more than 6 months.
