Nitrate removal from groundwater by a biofilm reactor
In this study.a new kind of biofilm reactor was developed using a laboratory-scale experimental apparatus for treatment of nitrate-contaminated groundwater.Nitrate removal efficiency, nitrite accumulation,COD and pH in the treated water were detected under various conditions set by several parameters including hydraulic retention times(HRTs)(24,20,16,12,8,4 and 2 hours),influent nitrate loading(50,100 and 150 N03-N mg/L),pH(5,6,7,8,and 9)and ratio of carbon and molecule nitrogen(C/N=3,2,1.5 and 1.25).The experiment results demonstrated that the optimum reaction parameters were pH=7-7.5,C/N=1.25 and HRT=8h.High-quality effluent water in terms of nitrate, nitrite and COD was obtained when the concentration of N03-N was no more than 100 mg/L under the optimum conditions.
