Conditions of cultivating and characteristics of aerobic granular sludge in a completely mixed reactor

In order to investigate the possibility of cultivating aerobic granules in a continuous complete—mixing reactor,a continuous—flow turbulent bed biofilm reactor with working volume of 4 litres was used in the experiment.The reactor was seeded with mature biofilm from another running biofilm reactor.The experimental results showed that aerobic granular sludge could be cultivated in a completely mixed reactor under continuous.fiux mode.High COD loading(22.42 kg COD m-3d-1)。Short Hydraulic Retention Time(1.2h)and appropriate turbulence(200L air/h for 4 litres reactor)favored the formation of aerobic granular sludge.The granules obtained were smooth,high activity(76.54mgCOD/h.gVS)and good settling abifity(settling velocity was between 20.3-3 1.4m/h).On the contrary,long HRT and low loading were adverse for the stabilization of the granules and induced dispersion of granules ultimately underexperimental conditions.
