Degradation of cyanobacterial toxin Microcystin-LR by electrochemical oxidation processes
The occurrence of cyanobacteria and their potent toxins has imposed a risk to human health and raised concerns in water treatment. This study was performed to investigate the variables that influence the efficiency of degradation of a solution containing cyanobacterial toxin microcystin-LR by electrochemical oxidation. The processes were realized in a tubular reactor in which Ti/RuO2 was used as anode and stainless steel was used as cathode.Current densitY,hydraulic detention time, electrolyte type and concentration.and initial MC-LR concentration were the variables studied. The efficiency of the method tested was determined by measurement of MC-LR removal and reduction by HPLC analysis. The results showed that when the applied current density increased.the removal efficiency of MC-LR could be increased obviously.100%removal efficiency for MC-LR was achieved at the current density of 8 mA/cm2 with the hydraulic detention time of 60 min.The Na2SO4 electrolyte was more effective than other electrolytes of NaNO3 and phosphate buffers.Concentration of Na2SO4 electrolyte had little influence on the MC-LR removal efficiency.Whereas,it was observed that the initial MC-LR concentration influenced the MC-LR removal efficiency more greatly.
