Advanced wastewater disinfection treatment of a tertiary municipal effluent by chlorine and chlorine dioxide

Wastewater reclamation and reuse is supposed to be a potential and practical way and may play an important role in the development of strategies for the utilization of water resources.Disinfection is thought to be the key-step in the reclaimed treatment chains.In this study,a pilot plant was built to disinfect the reclaimed water from a tertiary municipal wastewater treatment plant with chlorine and chlorine dioxide.Experiment results showed that both disinfectants are effective for pathogen removal.NO total coliforms can be detected after 30min contact with 6 mg/L and 7.12mg/L of chlorine and chlorine dioxide,respectively.At the same time,COD,NH3-N and colourness in effluent were also reduced due to their strong oxidation potential.More NH3-N is removed with chlorine under the same conditions.Which indicted that chlorine is more reactive with ammoniam than chlorine dioxide.Significant DBPs were detected in the effluent after chlorine disinfection.especially for dichloromethane and trichioromethane.When 8 mg/L of chlorine was added total trihalomethanes(TTHM)in the effluent could reach as high as 6.94 mg/L,which was nearly 4 times high as that in the influent.High chlorine dosage encourages high DBPs production.However,for chlorine dioxide.there is no increase of DBPs at the same concentration.Therefore.chlorine dioxide is a potential disinfectant for reclaimed water from the viewpoint of public health.
