Preparation and characteristics of carbon-supported copper catalyst and its application in the removal of phenol in aqueous solution by microwave assisted catalytic oxidation

Carbon-supported copper(Cu/GAC)catalyst was prepared by improved impregnation method using rmcrowave energy and characterized by scanning electron microscopy(SEM),energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDX)and X-ray diffraction(XRD).The average size of Cu particles dispersing on the surface of GAC was 0.6 μm,which could be penetrated by microwave so that Cu/GAC catalyst could absorb microwave energy effectively. The catalysis of Cu/GAC in microwave assisted catalytic oxidation of phenol in aqueous solution was investigated through a fixed bed reactor under ambient pressure and continuous flow mode. The removal efficiency of phenol in aqueous solution with initial concentration 2166 mg/L reached 90% under the conditions of microwave power 400 W, influent flow 8 mL/min and air flow 160 mL/min.It showed Cu/GAC catalyst kept on a stable catalysis for 8 hours run.which indicated that GAC structure and catalytic capacity were improved by the load of Cu.Hydraulic retention time was shortened greatly compared with catalytic wet air oxidation.Pyrolysis and oxidation of phenol occurred simultaneously on the surface of Cu/GAC catalyst by microwave irradiation.
