Effect of coagulant Fe(OH)3 addition on MBR for sewage treatment

The application of submerged membrane bioreactor(SMBR)is limited because of the lower removal of total phosphorous and membrane fouling problem. The research studies the effeCt of Fe(OH)3 dose(0.3%,5%and 7%of mix liquid suspended solids)on activated sludge character.Effiuent quality and membrane fouling for bioferric SMBR process to treat simulated municipal sewage.Compared to other doses, when Fe(OH)3 is 5%,the trans-membrane pressure increment iS the slowest and membrane fouling is lowest,at the same time, the removal of toml phosphorus is highest to attain 91%.In which the total phosphorus concentration of membrane effluent is 0.51-0.93mg/L while that of raw water is 6.5~9.7me4L.Micrograph of activated sludge shows the structure iS loose as no addition of Fe(OH)3:while.as dose increases to 5%,the activated sludge form the favorable zoogloea where colloid Fe(OH)3 entrap the activated sludge flocs effectively;whereas,as dose increases further to 7%.The sludge seems to disaggregate and results in more small particles. Thus, when Fe(OH)3 dose is zero or underdosing and overdosing, activated sludge is not good to adsorb the dissolved organics and phosphorous and aggravate the membrane fouling. In addition, with dose increasing from 0 and 3%to 5%and 7%.The COD remoral enhances from 90%tO 97%and NH3-N removals are similar to 95%.
