Tailoring the Morphology of Anti-Bancroft Type HIPE-Templated Porous Monoliths

Emulsion templating is a versatile method for the preparation of well-defmed open porous monoliths. In general, the technique involves forming a high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) (≥74.05 vol% internal phase)1,2. The polymerization of HIPEs (W/O) provides a direct synthetic route to a variety of novel, porous monoliths (polyHIPEs) for many applications 2-5 due to not only their highly porous and interconnected structure, but also the possibility of tailoring their morphology by tuning the physical properties of the HIPE prior to curing. There are various methods 5 by which the average void and interconnect diameter of polyHIPEs can be altered. However, all of these work are only involved the HIPEs that obey Bancroft rule 6.Recently, we developed a new approach to obtain stable W/O HIPEs which involve only ionic surfactant (e.g.Cetyltrimethylammonium Bromide, CTAB) firstly 7. Although the surfactant used in these HIPEs contradicts Bancroft rule, this technique allows preparation of stable HIPEs, and hence functionalized porous materialsbased on this type HIPEs in one-step with uniform void and interconnect diameter, much higher pore volume. This method provides an alternative approach to polyHIPEs for use in the green chemistry directly 8.
