The Compatibility of PET/LLDPE-g-GMA Blends with Varying Extent of Grafting Yield

Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) is a widely used thermoplastic polyester. But virgin PET has many disadvantages, such as low impact strength, narrow scope of processing temperature, easy to degrade under water and thermal, which limit its application as an engineering plastic 1. Blending with polyolefin is a suitable way to modify PET 2. In this paper, linear low density polyethylene(LLDPE) is used to blend with PET by low temperature solid-state processing, which can enhance the mechanical properties of PET and improve the process condition. Because PET and LLDPE are not compatible, glycidyl methacrylate(GMA) grafting LLDPE was prepared by melt-grafted reaction in Haake mixer before blending. GMA functionalized LLDPE own epoxy groups that can react with the hydroxyl or carboxyl end groups of PET, which improve the compatibility of PET and LLDPE.
