Acrylic polymers with high acrylonitrile content polymerized in l-buty-3-methylimidazolium chloride
Ionic liquids (Ils) are considered to be environmentally friendly reaction media for chemical processes due to their unique properties, such as non-volatility, stability to air and water and good solvability 1. The polymerization of acrylonitrile in ionic liquids has been reported, which exhibits the potential advantage of replacing the traditional volatile solvents 2 such as higher polymerization rate and larger molecular weight of the final polymer. As we all known, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) with the unique advantage of high chemical and physical stability is the excellent raw material for carbon fiber. The free radical polymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) with different content of methyl acrylate (MA) were carried out in ionic liquid 1-buty-3-methylimidazolium chloride BMIMC1. Furthermore, thermal analysis was conducted to interpret the potential of resulting polymers as the raw material of carbon fiber.
