Effect of Reactive Extrusion Processing of Block Copolymerization on the Molecular Construction and Properties of the Copolymers

Nowadays, all the industrialized polyolefin block copolymers (SBS, SIS, K-resin etc) products are synthesized via anionic solution polymerization, In such type of polymerization, the reactant mixture and heat transfer could be easily processed. However, this method also encounters some insurmountable problems, such as high energy consumption and environmental pollution due to the using and retrieving the solvents, which are 5 to 6 times of the products itself by weight. In order to eliminate the use of solvents, a novel approach, reactive extrusion, has been developed to prepare polyolefin block copolymers in our group. In this work, a novel multi-block copolymer of styrene (S) and diene (D) (butadiene or isoprene ) synthesized by one step bulk polymerization, using a closely intermeshing twin-screw extruder (φ 35 nun and L/D 56) as the reactor, S/D mixture as the monomer and organic lithium as the initiator, was reported.
