Synthesis and Self-organization of Comb-block-comb Biopolymers Bearing Cholesteryl Biomesogen

In this study, we report our effort to prepare amphiphilic comb-block-comb (CBC) biopolymers based on a combination of RAFT polymerization and click chemistry. On one block main chain hydrophilic PEG side chains are grafted and on another block main chain cholesteryl groups are attached. According to the strategy shown in Scheme 1 this is a kind of biomesogen approaches. The mesogen grafting was carried out by the click copper-mediated cycloaddition of azido cholesteryl onto main chain with pendent acetylene groups.These polymers with structure-based functions such as anisotropy and thermotropic properties have potential applications as drug carriers etc.. This research provides a novel biomesogen approach to develop a new kind of amphiphilic biopolymers with an ordered structure and high functionality.
