Synthesis of a new hydroxy functionalized polyesters by ROP copolymerization of cyclic comonomers, based on the renewable resources
Prompted by environmental concern, socio-economical reasons and political opportunity, the last decades had witnessed an increasing interest towards the exploitation of biomass as a primary feedstock for the production of chemical products and bio-materials1. L-lactic acid is a good example of a chemical platform derived by industrial fermentation of readably available renewable resources (e.g. starch from cereals, sugarcanes). This compound can be oligomerized and than catalytically dimerized to make L-lactide-cyclic monomers for ring opening polymerization. A highmolecular polymer obtained this way: polylactide PLA is a particularly attractive biodegradable material as a sustainable alternative to petrochemical-derived products.
