Supramolecular hydrogels made of low-molecular-weight PEO and a-cyclodextrin and their hybridization with Si02 nanoparticles through host-guest interaction

During past few years, supramolecular hydrogels formed from cyclodextrins (CD) and PEO1, 2 or PEO-containing amphiphilic triblock 3-5 and graft copolymers 6,7 have attracted much attention due to their potential applications in the biomedical fields such as drug delivery and release and tissue engineering. In all these cases, high molecular weight PEO (Mn>10k) or corresponding block copolymers are always needed because low molecular weight (Mn < 2k) PEO homopolymers only lead to crystals of stoichiornetric inclusion complexes rather than hydrogels. However, it is known that water-soluble polymer chains with high molecular weights (normally Mn>10k) are not suitable for filtration through human kidney membrane due to the large hydrodynamic radius.8
