Application of Particles with Polymer Brushes in Pickering Emulsion
An emulsion stabilized by solid particles instead of surfactant molecules was called Picketing emulsion.1 Inthe cosmetics, food and paint industries, solid particles find practical applications in emulsions. The solidparticles have surfactant-like properties.2-5 When dispersed in a mixture of oil and water, the particles havestrong tendency to locate at the interfacial region between oil and water, mainly due to the reduction of the totalinterfacial energy upon replacing part of the liquid-liquid or liquid-vapor interface by liquid-particle interface.Polymer brushes on the surface of solid particles can further reduce the interfacial tension between oil and water.In our lab we investigated applications of (1) clay layers with block copolymer brushes, (2) clay layers withmixed polymer brushes, and (3) gold nanoparticles with mixed polymer brushes in Pickering suspensionpolymerizations.
