Design, Synthesis and Properties of a Novel Type of Redox-Based Chiroptically Switching Polymers
Chiroptically switching materials have been actively developed in the past decade due to their potentialuses in photonics applications such as data storage and control of polarizations.1 However, most studies in thisregard focused on chiroptically switching properties in the UV-vis spectral region (e.g. 200-600 nm) andmaterials exhibiting significant chiropticaily switching properties in the NIR spectral region (e.g., 800-2000 nm)are not yet known. In previous studies,2 we prepared a novel type of redox-based chiroptical switchingmolecules containing 1,l-bianphthyls and electrochromic viologens. These molecules, upon redox cycles, exhibited very large chiroptical property changes in circular dichroism in the spectral range of 400-750 nm andin optical rotations in the NIR region (e.g. 800-3000 nm). Towards polarization materials suitable for thin-filmapplications, we herein prepared a novel type of chiroptically switching polymers based on the above mentionedsmall molecules. The redox-based chiroptically switching properties will be presented.
