Monitoring the Average Molecular Weight and Molecular Weight Distribution during Polymer Degradation by PFG NMR
Degradable polymers have found numerous applications in industry. Understanding their degradationmechanisms under various conditions is of special importance in order to improve their properties and to designnew structures of such polymers. In this study, the degradation of two biodegradable polymers, namelycross-linked polyethyleneimine (c-PEI) and γ-polyglutamic acid (γ-PGA) were monitored by real-time 1H-NMRspectroscopy and PFG NMR. 1H 2D COSY and HSQC NMR spectroscopy were also employed to elucidate thestructural changes during degradation. These same polymers have recently attracted specific attention due totheir potential use as gene-carriers.
