Synthesis of Star Comb Hyperbranched Polybutadiene Based on Seed Tree Polymerization Technique

A novel class of dendritic macromolecules whose branching points are linked to each other by true polymericchains has emerged in the literature 1. Both chloromethyl 2 and acety1 3 functionalities have been used ascoupling sites for the preparation of arborescent styrene homopolymers. Epoxide functionalities 4 have beenused as coupling sites for the preparation of arborescent isoprene homopolymers. A technique was proposed by Nikos Hadjichristidis 5 for the convergent synthesis of well-defined G2 andG3 dendritic polybutadienes (PB) with the use of a novel dual-functional linking agent4-(dichloromethylsilyl)diphenylethylene (DCMSDPE). However, the grafting sites were only on the terminalgroups. The synthesis of arborescent polybutadiene was reported by Hempenius 6. Coupling sites wereintroduced by exhaustive hydrosilylationwith dimethylchiorosilane of the pendent vinyl group of 1,2-units on apolybutadiene substrate and reacted with polybutadienyllithium (PBLi). Unfortunately, the unstable ofehlorosilane intermediate and difficulty of varying the branching density of the graft polymers are two problemsencountered in this approach.
