Synthesis and Characterization of Hexakis(m-phenylene imine) Macrocycles
Highly shape-anisotropic and persistent phenylene imine macrocycles are attractive in the fields ofsupermolecular chemistry and material science because of their potential applications and novel properties. Avariety of supramolecular assembly, including porous organic solids, discotic liquid crystals, three dimensionalnanostructures, extended tubular channels, host-guest complexes have been realized from these building blocks.1)However, the efficient preparation of functionalized macrocycles has been a challenging task. It is notuncommon for these preparation to involve a large number of synthetic steps, to require dilute conditions (< lmM), and to afford low overall yields. We succeeded in preparing rapidly and quantitatively a novelmacrocycle, hexakis(m-phenylene imine) macrocycle (Cm6). A possible mechanism for the selective formation of Cm6 was investigated using TOF-MS and NMR spectroscopy. The structure was predicted by MO calculation and determined using single crystal X-ray analysis and WAXD. Recently, its analogues havebeen successfully synthesized and their various properties have been studied. In this presentation, the results will be introduced.
