Tadpole-Shaped Copolymers via ATRP, Click Chemistry and Ring Opening Polymerization
Tadpole-shaped and sun-shaped polymers, with a macrocycle connected to one or many linear polymer chains, belong to a new category of polymer architecture.1,2 If the chemical composition of the macrocycle and thelinear chain is different, they are like block copolymers or graft copolymers in chemical structure, but maydisplay quite different properties as macrocycles already shown.3 Formation of a macrocycle is the key step insynthesis of such copolymers. Macrocycles with narrow molecular distributions have been prepared mostly bythe ring-closure ot α, ω-ends of linear polymers. Highefficiency of cyclization and easy access to well definedlinear precursors.with α,ω-ends are necessary. Thedevelopment of living radical polymerization and the clickchemistry has made it easy to prepare different kinds ofmacrocycles.4 The recent work of Jeromes group is anothervery efficient way to prepare cyclic PCL and the relatedtadpole or sun-shaped copolymers.5 In this work, wesynthesized two types of tadpole-shaped copolymers, (c-PMMA)-b-PCL and (c-PMMA)-b-PEO, with an aim tocompare their properties with the linear counterparts. Thesynthetic strategy is shown in Scheme 1. Acetylene-terminated PMMA was obtained through room temperatureATRP of MMA, and then one styrene derivative was addedunder an ATRP condition. After converting the bromide endgroup to azide, click reaction in dilute solution results in theformation of a macrocycle. The OH group can then be usedto initiate the ring opening polymerization of CL.
