Evaluating the effects of mobile technology on an outdoor experiential learning
The aim of this study is to evaluate theeffects of mobile technology on an outdoorexperiential learning. We developed a mobilelearning system with a learning flow to support anoutdoor activity and then analyzed how PDA deviceswere incorporated and implemented in two classes ofprimary school students. The results indicate thatknowledge creation was more effective in the classwith PDAs than in the one without them. However, using activity theory as an analytical framework, wefurther discovered that underlying tensions providedrich insights into system dynamics and thattechnological affordances could be limited by amismatch between the tools as such, and the way inwhich they were used by learners or were arrangedby the instructor. The subtle human factors present inthe use of technologies should be carefullyconsidered. The influence of mobile devices onlearner experiences in experiential learning is alsothoroughly discussed.
