Tools for Students Doing Mobile Fieldwork
Students are not always sitting at their desk but arealso out in the world. In a university course teachingethnography and design students were out in the fieldmaking observations and collecting data. We gavethem access to a wiki, which they used to upload fieldnotes and material as a support for collaboration. Inthis paper we present three tools we built anddeployed to aid the students when in field and whencollaborating. The first is a mobile tool used togather data: a program running on the studentsmobile phones let them take photos, record video andaudio, and write simple text notes, which areautomatically uploaded to the wiki. The second is anawareness tool that enables the students to quicklysee what the others have done in the wiki. The third is a novel browser for the uploaded data, which relatesobjects by both time and location. We also talk aboutthe experience from having students using the toolslive during the course.
