Use of Mobile Phones in Language Learning:Developing Effective Instructional Materials
(0) With its widespread use and its features andfunctions such as mobility, reachability, localization,and personalization, mobile phone technology offers agreat potential in learning environments. With thisconsideration, our first and foremost aim in this studyhas been to make use of this profound interest andpotential, and contribute to the efforts to enhanceexisting educational practices, particularly in thedeveloping regions of the world. Therefore, wedeveloped instructional materials to be deliveredthrough mobile phones operated in second generationGSM technology in order to improve English languagelearners vocabulary acquisition. The multimediamessages in this study allowed students to see thedefinitions of words, example sentences, related visual representations, and pronunciations. After studentsfinished reading multimedia messages, interactiveshort message service (SMS) quizzes for testing theirlearning were sent. This paper suggests someimportant points to consider while creating MMScontent and a SMS quiz system for educationalpurposes.
