Effect of Heat Treatment on Water-absorption Characteristics in Plantaion-grown Eucalyptus Wood
In order to explore the highly value-added potential of plantation-grown Eucalyptus wood,which may be used as solid-wood products outdoors, the heat treatments were carried out on flatesawn boards including heartwood and sapwood in four species of Eucalyptus urophylla,E.grandis,E.urophylla×grandis and E.grandis×urophylla wood under seven levels of 25℃, 50℃,100℃, 140℃, 180℃, 220℃, 250℃.The water-absorption characteristics were determinated and analyzed on l-mm-thickness cross section of heartwood and sapwood under all above-mentioned temperature conditions.The results dedicate that: 1) the water-sorption percentage of heartwood on four species of Eucalyptus wood decrease first and then increase with the increase of heat-treatment temperature, and take on the turning point at 100℃. For sapwood, the water-sorption percentage increase first, then decrease, present turning point at 140℃ and arrive at stability when exceeding heat-treatment temperature of 180℃. 2) the changing trend of the water-sorption characteristics in heartwood and sapwood in four species Eucalyptus wood under different heat-treatment conditions take on the certain regularity, i.e. Eucalyptus urophylla >E.urophylla×grandis > E.grandis>E.grandis×urophylla. 3) heat-treatment temperature of 180℃ is more suitable for processing plantation-grown Eucalyptus wood based on the change of water-sorption percentage in four species of Eucalyptus wood. Compared to the other there species of Eucalyptus,it is most potential for Eucalyptus urophyllar to be used as solid-wood products outdoors.
