Safety Assessment of Civil Engineering Structures Using Hilbert-Huang Transform

A general method for the analysis of a time series, called Hilbert-Huang Transform has been recently developed by Huang In this paper, Hilbert-Huang Transform method is used to analyze two time series data comparing to wavelet analysis. The results show that Hilbert-Huang Transform is not only one efficient method for analyzing non-stationary data, but also a useful tool for examining detail characters of time history signal. Time domain vibration data from a scaled civil building model undergoing different seismic loads was then processed through the Hilbert-Huang transform to obtain frequency and damping information. The frequency and damping information was later processed to extract the underlying structurul safety properties. Results illustrate that Hilbert-Huang Transform is a powerful signal processing tool that tracks unique features in the vibratory response of smscture.
