Fuzzy Inference System to Risk Ranking Indices for Hazard Installations in Chemical Process Industry

In order to overcome the deficiencies of semi-quantitative risk assessment method and to use the linguistic information from the experts for determining the risk ranking indices for hazard installations, an approach based on Mamdani fuzzy inference system in chemical process industry was presented which the input variables for frequency index and consequence index and output variables for fuzzy risk index were modeled as fuzzy sets. By this method, the fuzzy inference rules of the kind IF...THEN...were introduced and the fuzzy inference system was established using MATLAB program tool. The proposed approach was applied to some hazard installations risk ranking problems. The results were compared to those obtained by means of the semi-quantitative risk assessment which demonstrated that fuzzy inference system based on the experts knowledge and experience had the potential for risk ranking problems compared with semi-quantitative risk assessment.
