Effect of Duty-cycle on Losses, Efficiency and Throughput Power of Ferrite-core Transformers with Non-sinusoidal Flux

In general for transformers used in SMPS converters the waveform of flux in the ferrite cores is not sinusoidal. Manufacturers of ferrite cores specify the loss in the core for sinusoidai flux. In practical converter transformers the duty-cycle of the magnetization is controlled to achieve regulation of the output.Steinmetzs equation for loss in a ferrite core, the mathematical expression for the concept of an equivalent sinusoidal frequency for a non-sinusoidal magnetic flux waveform, and the condition for maximum efficiency of a ferrite core transformer are used to formulate the variation of current density in winding, losses in the ferrite core and windings, efficiency and throughput power of a transformer with the variation in duty-cycle of the flux waveform for a given power ferrite material at a specified frequency, amplitude of flux density and operating temperature.
