Alternative Proposal for Greening Chinas Loess Plateau

Geosynthetic mesh is proposed as an alternative measure to stop/reduce the severe erosion on the Loess Plateau in northwest China. Geosynthetic mesh has been widely used in civil engineering for the protection of riverbanks, etc. Its durability, easy installation, low cost and effectiveness have made it a favoured material for erosion control. The net-like structure of geosynthetic mesh would cushion the impact of raindrops on exposed loess soil and prevent runoff damage to the ground, as well as allowing vegetation growth under the mesh. Thus it would help to stop further erosion and encourage vegetation recovery on the Loess Plateau. Covering the ground of the Loess Plateau with geosynthetic mesh would also reduce the silt flow into the Yellow River, thus reducing the rise of the river bed in the lower reach of the river and consequently reducing the occurrence of floods in the Chinas northern plain.
