Full-scale field test of restoration of permeability of clogged subsurface wetland by Eisenia foetida

Clog could occur after one or two years’loading of the subsurface constructed wetland for water and wastewater treatment.The clog is hardly avoided especially for the high loading wetland.and then sometimes affects the normal operation or even has the wetland treatment field disused.In the study,Eisenia foetida addition was used as a method to resolve the clog of down-flow wetlands.and six full-scale seriously clogged down-flow wetlands were successfully restored on site.On the average.the permeability of clogged subsurface wetland can be restored after 10 days under the temperature of 26℃.In the case of restoration of seriously clogged wetland,it is suggested that influent should be paused after Eisenia foetida addition.The test provided an effective economical way for the clogged wetland restoration.The method is easy to grasp and no artificial maintenance required,and the optimal dose of Eisenia foetida addition was 0.5)kg Eisenia foetida per square meter,which only cost 6 RMB Yuan per square meterthough in Shanghai.The most developed city in China.
