Causality Relationship between Energy Consumption and Economic Growth: based on Panel Data of Provinces in China

Many economists focuse on the causality relationship between energy consumption and economic growth in China. In this paper we reinvestigate this debate with the panel data of provinces in China, where the technology of panel unit root test, panel cointegration test and panel-based error correction models are employed. The empirical results show that the energy consumption and the economic growth have a long run cointegration relationship. The evidence shows that long-run causality run from GDP to energy consumption, but not vice versa. The energy cousumption can affect economic growth in short run but not very evidcnt. This resuh indicates that energy conservation does not harm to economic growth and we should make different policies of energy conservation in different provinces.
