Orientation induced β-crystallization of iPP

IPP is one of the polymers exhibiting pronounced polymorphism depending upon the thermal and mechanical treatments. While the α modification can be easily produced by melt crystallization of commercial grade iPP under static condition, the β form is difficult to be obtained under normal processing conditions and therefore has been considered as laboratory curiosities. Nevertheless, it attracts due attentions owing to its different performance characteristics, including lower crystal density,melting temperature, and markedly improved impact strength and toughness. Studies in this field concern mostly the effect of shear rate on the β-crystallization of iPP. The mechanism of its crystallization remains, however, a long-standing problem.
