2-Oxazoline/benzoxazole-1,10-phenanthrolinylmetal (iron, cobalt or nickel) Dichloride:Synthesis, Characterization and Their Ethylene Oligomerization

Late transition metal complexes have demonstrated potential as catalysts for ethylene oligomerisation because of their facile β-H elimination.Recent years, 2-(2-pyridyl)benzazoles have gained much attention due to their ability to chelate as ligands in Pt and Pd complexes.Accordingly, substitution of the heteroatom in the benzazoles would presumably affect its electron density and its ability to donate electrons, which in turn should affect its catalytic activity.Bianchini and his coworkers also found that for the cobalt complexes with (imino)pyridine ligands bearing thiophen-2-yl in the 6-position of the pyridine ring are 5 times more active than that with furanyl group in the same position for ethylene dimerization,To the best of our knowledge, reports related to such ligand effects on ethylene oligomerization or polymerization performance catalyzed by late-transition-metal catalysts are scarce. The starting point of this work was our studies on late-transition-metal (Fe, Co, Ni)-catalyzed ethylene oligomerization with 2-(benzimidazol-2-yl)-1,10-phenanthrolines as the chiral ligands.We thought that introducing an oxygen atom in place of a second nitrogen atom of 2-(benzimidazol-2-yl)-1,10-phenanthroline ligands would affect its catalytic performance, including activity and selectivity for a-olefins. Furthermore, by tuning the steric and electronic effects of alkyl substituents (R1, R2, R3) in the ligands, these complexes are investigated for ethylene oligomerization, including their catalytic activities and selectivities for α-olefins.
