Preparation and Properties of novel poly(ether imide) derived from 2,2-bis4-(3,4diearboxyphenox) phenyl propane dianhydride

Poly(ether imide) (PEI) is an engineering thermoplastic with excellent mechanical and thermal properties. It has been widely used to improve the toughness of thermosets. But commercially available PEI is difficult to be dissolved in epoxy resin by melt mixing. Researchers always use dichloroform to dissolve PE! and epoxy resin together. However, other low boiling point solvents with low toxicity such as tetrahydrofuran is difficult to dissolve commercial PEI. These are two undesirable facts regarding the application of toughened epoxy resins in prepregs which are prepared by hot-melt or solvents method. In this research, a series of molecular-weight-controlled aromatic PEIs were synthesized. The solubility, thermal properties and mechanical properties of PEIs were investigated.
