Rationally Designed Functional Polymers for Biomimetic Mineralization of Calcium Carbonate

Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is the most common one among the over sixty kinds of biological minerals, which has three anhydrous crystalline polymorphs, i.e., vaterite, aragonite, and calcite in order of increasing stability. Inspired by the exquisite and highly functional architectures of biominerals, organic templates and/or additives with complex functionalization patterns are universally employed to control the nucleation, growth and alignment of inorganic crystals for the biomimetic synthesis of inorganic materials with specific size, shape, morphology and structure as reviewed recently. A kind of polymer additives so called double hydrophilic block copolymers (DHBCs) have been successfully employed in the biomimetic syntheses of inorganic minerals owing to its separation of the binding and solving functions.
