Modification of Carbon Nanotubes Using Supercritical CO2 Antisolvent Technique

Owing to their outstanding structural, electronic, mechanical and other properties, carbon nanotubes (CNTs)have been emphasized in a wide range of myriad applications, including use as a conductive filler or reinforcement in polymer/CNTs composites, as a template to grow high surface-to-volume ratio materials, and being assembled into nanoelectronic devices. However, the development of such applications has been seriously limited by the dispersion of CNTs in organic solvent or polymer matrix, since as-produced CNTs are easily bundled and entangled largely due to the strong inter-tube van der Waals interactions. So modifying or functionalizing CNTs has been identified as the most crucial step toward improving the dispersibility of CNTs.
