Polyurethane/Carbon Nanotubes Composite Foam

Polyurethane (PU) is one of the most versatile materials today. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are ideal reinforcing fibers for composites because they have high aspect ratio, excellent mechanical strength, electrical and thermal conductivity. PU/CNTs composites can combine the merits of CNTs and PU, and possess some special functions that conventional PU hasnt. In this study, the well-dispersed and long-term stable CNTs/polyol dispersions were prepared by a mechanochemical approach with the aid of dispersing agent. PU/CNTs elastomers and foams were prepared by further in-situ polymerization. The influences of cell opener and foam stabilizer on the structure of foams were studied. FTIR, SEM and DSC were used to characterize the structure. The compression strength and water retention rate were measured. The results showed the compression strength and water retention rate of the PU/CNTs composite foams were dramatically enhanced compared to blank PU. PU/CNTs foam was used for cell culture due to the similar three-dimensional micro-porous structure as bio-derived bone scaffolds. In the cell compatibility experiment, the growth of cells on the scaffolds was observed. The cells could adhere and grow on both PU and PU/CNTs three-dimensional scaffolds, and also secrete extra-cellular matrix, which indicates that CNTs havent the adverse effect on the cell behaviors.
