ENHANCED TOUGHNESS AND THERMAL PROPERTIES OF POLYBENZOXAZINE BY HYBRIDIZATION WITH POLYSILOXANE

1.IntroductionPolybenzoxazine is a new class of heat resistant phenolic resin. It shows high thermal properties, high mechanical properties and case processability. Benzoxazine monomer can be synthesized from inexpensive raw materials and polymerized simply by heat treatment through ring-opening polymerization (Scheme 1).However, polybenzoxazine shows low toughness. Multicomponent approach based on polybenzoxazine has been studied to enhance the toughness of polybenzoxazine due to its versatility. Polybenzoxazine was mixed with liquid rubber, polyurethane, polyimide, poly(imide-siloxane)s to afford toughness improvement of polybenzoxazine. Polybenzoxazine and poly(imide-siloxane)s hybrid showed enhancement on toughness and thermal properties of polybenzoxazine. Silicone is a unique heat resistant elastomer. In this study, we examine the toughness enhancement of bisphenol A-aniline type polybenzoxazine (PBa) by incorporation in-situ formed polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) prepared by in-situ sol-gel process of diethoxydimethylsilane (DEDMS)(Scheme 1).
