Copolymers obtained by polymerization in situ of vinyl and lactam monomers in the presence of dissolved high performance polymers

Usually, the role of macromolecular activators for lactam anionic polymerization is carried out by the specially synthesized polymers having grafted acyllactam groups. In contrast to that, we have firstly demonstrated the principal possibility of common (without any grafted acyllactam side chains) aromatic polyimides (PI)utilization as an excellent activators for lactam anionic polymerization. Thus, a variety of aromatic polyimides,soluble in lactams melt, were successfully used in the polymerization of ε-caprolactam and its copolymerization with ω-laurocalactam. It was proved polymerization activation is occurred due to imide cycles opening in PI backbone under the action of lactam anionic polymerization catalyst, namely ε-caprolactam magnesium bromide.
