Development of Membrane Materials for PEM Fuel cell applications

Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell is currently an important research topic in all leading research centers and academia worldwide. The center of the PEM fuel cell is the polymer membrane used as polymer electrolyte. The selection of membrane is crucial for the efficient performance of the fuel cells. So far perfluorosulfonated ionomer membranes have been used in these fuel cells, which are expensive and have some other drawbacks. As a result alternative cheaper membrane materials have been developed.Various approaches have been followed by various research groups for the development of alternate membrane materials. The composite membrane approach represents one of the ways to improve the properties of the polymer electrolyte membranes. In this lecture development of various proton-conducting composite membranes for PEM fuel cell applications will be discussed. The results will also include the recently developed membranes in our lab.
