Crystallization Behavior of Polypropylene Induced by Cyclodextrin-polyolefin Inclusion Compounds

In recent years, inclusion compounds (ICs) formed by cyclodextrin (CD) and high molecular polymer have attracted much attention in polymer science, owing to their unique supramolecular structure and specific characteristics. The formation and properties of CD ICs with various polymers have been studied extensively to improve miscibility, biodegradability, and crystallization of polymers. In this study, several kinds of polyolefin (PO) such as polyethylene (PE),polypropylene (PP).polybutene (PB) were chosen as guest molecules to prepare CD-PO-ICs.FT-infrared (FTIR),Wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) observations were used to prove the inclusion of the guest polymer chains into the narrow channels provided by the stacks of the CD molecules. The polyolefin with low molecular weight was fully covered by CDs while the polyolefm with high molecular weight was partially. By using DSC, polarized optical microscopy (POM) and light scattering apparatus to investigate crystallization behavior of iPP blended with these ICs, the nucleation effect of the ICs on the crystallization of iPP could be researched. The iPP blended with ICs had higher crystallization temperature (Tc), more and smaller spherulites, and shorter crystallization time, indicating that these ICs had good nucleation effect on nucleation and crystallization of iPP. The ICs partially covered by CDs had better nucleation effect than ones fully covered by CDs. And the guest molecules also played an important role in the nucleation effect of the ICs. For the ICs partially covered by CDs, if the guest molecular unit of ICs uncovered by CDs was similar with the prime polymer unit, the IC had better nucleation effect. Therefore, the nucleation effect of the CD-PP IC was better than that of CD-PE IC and CD-PB IC.
